The Impact of Linguistic Discrimination and Racism on English Language Learning in an International School

Abstract

Various sociocultural factors leave a big impact on English language learners on a daily basis. While some factors help students to overcome language acquisition obstacles more quickly and easily, others are not so beneficial. Linguistic racism and discrimination are processes that, in many ways, can prevent a student from acquiring a language in the right way, and can also create an extremely negative feeling towards the language that will form psychological barriers for the student every time it is used. Although these processes are represented to a certain extent in almost all educational centres, international schools are the institutions where they come to the greatest expression. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical overview of linguistic racism and discrimination, as well as to show ways in which discrimination can be prevented and how the students can be supported. Furthermore, the impact of racism on the process of learning and teaching the English language is also depicted. All of the above has been concluded based on personal experience gained through ten years of work at the British International School Arcadia Academy in Kotor, Montenegro. In order for teachers to be able to help students in these situations, they have to meet and know each student well, which represents the biggest charm of this job.
