The Experience of Secondary School Students About Online and Short Classes During the Pandemic, Compared to the Traditional Classes

The goal of the research was to examine how highschool students from the Republic of Srpska experienced the modalities of online and shortened classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to traditional classes before the pandemic. It was also checked whether the experiences of teaching can be explained by differences in personality traits and general satisfaction with life of the students. The sample included 673 high school students, who self-assessed their perception of abbreviated, online, and traditional teaching modalities using the Student Experience of Teaching Scale, comprised of the dimensions of Academic Workload and Satisfaction. The experience of the abbreviated teaching modality, which was current at the time of the examination, was additionally examined with open-ended questions. The results show that satisfaction with traditional teaching is the highest, and satisfaction with online teaching is the lowest. The academic workload is highest in online, and the lowest in the shortened classes modality. Satisfaction is higher than academic workload for traditional and shortened classes. Academic workload is higher than satisfaction for online classes. Personality traits and life satisfaction of students explains relatively low amout of variance in dimensions of teaching experience (3.3–10.1%), with two notable trends: conscientiousness and satisfaction with life are relatively consistent positive predictors of satisfaction and negative predictors of academic workload. nevertheless, the statistical control of personality traits and satisfaction with life generally leads to the loss of differences in the levels of academic workload and satisfaction according to the compared teaching modalities. Qualitative analyzes of the experience of abbreviated classes suggest that students emphasize the lack of (teaching) time, inadequate concept and method of teaching, overload and deprivation of knowledge as the biggest disadvantages of this modality. It is interesting that similar aspects are also highlighted as an advantage, because some students praise the adequacy of the concept and method of teaching, more free time, less time spent at school and less workload.
